In the movies and on TV, it seems actors always perform stunts and impossible feats with expertise and ease. But at the Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond this weekend, the actors were mere mortals.

The 12 celebrities slated to participate in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race on April 20, part of the 39th annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, took to the track for four days of race training.

Comedian Wanda Sykes admitted she is “just trying to stay alive.” Others who have participated in the charity competition took the intense training in stride, such as Jesse Metcalfe, star of the television show Dallas, who said he felt “a need for speed.”

Stars including Sykes and Metcalfe, and Olympic Gold Medalist and Long Beach native Jessica Hardy, made the early-morning trek out to the western-most valley of the Mojave Desert to get a crash course in basic racing from Fast Lane Racing School pro instructor Danny McKeever.

Other celebrities participating include Mexico’s most acclaimed actress Kate del Castillo (“La Reina del Sur,” “Under the Same Moon,” “Trade” and “Weeds”); Brett Davern (“Awkward”), Jenna Elfman (“Dharma & Greg” and “1600 Penn”); Jackson Rathbone (“Twilight”); Michelle Rodriguez (“Avatar”); Jeremy Sisto (“Six Feet Under”); Michael Trucco (“Castle” and “How I Met Your Mother”); Dakota Meyer, a former U.S. Marine and Medal of Honor recipient for his 2009 actions in Afghanistan; Grammy award-nominated and best-selling Mexican pop singer Cristian Castro; Mark Steins, Emmy award-winning journalist and host of Hallmark Channel’s “Home & Family;” and Rutledge Wood, auto racing analyst on Fox Sports/SPEED.

Jackson will be participating in this year’s Toyota Grand Pix charity race. The race will take place on April 20. Details below!

The 39th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach may be more than a month away, but some famous folks got the green flag Thursday when they were announced as drivers for “Revved Up to Race,” the 37th annual pro/celebrity race that serves as a warm-up for the main event.

Jackson Rathbone of “Twilight,” Jesse Metcalfe of “Dallas” and “Desperate Housewives,” and funny lady Wanda Sykes are only a few of the those who’ll be getting behind the wheel of identical new 210-horsepower Scion FR-S race vehicles and burning through 10 laps in downtown Long Beach on April 20.

The event not only benefits Racing for Kids, a national fundraising program supporting U.S. children’s hospitals, but, according to Toyota national motorsports manager Les Unger, allows the celebs to “feel the rush behind the wheel on the famous Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach track.”

It’s always nice to see stars give back. And before “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2” is released on DVD at midnight on March 2, stars from the film surprised kids at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles on Friday.

Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, and Jackson Rathbone all popped in to surprise kids who just thought they were getting a special screening of the film. The “Twilight” stars passed out signed DVDs, posed for pictures, and spent time talking with many families inside the hospital.

“When we were filming [Breaking Dawn] we went and gave our time at the Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge and it feels good to be able to give back,” Facinelli told omg! during his visit. “I know a lot of these kids are going through a hard time and anything you can do to put a smile on their face or make their day better, gives them positive energy and keep fighting the good fight to get better.”

Facinelli lit up the room by telling a few jokes to the patients and explained what went into filming some of the difficult scenes like the big showdown at the end. (Did you know they had to film with cardboard werewolfs?)

A dozen children gathered around a TV at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles March 1, watching a Blu-ray Disc of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, a day before it’s released to the public.

Keaira Lomas-Lee, 13, was answering trivia questions about the “Twilight” franchise before the movie began, smiling wide after getting one of the questions right. Her smile got a lot bigger when “Twilight” star Peter Facinelli (Dr. Carlisle Cullen) walked through the door.

“What are you guys watching?” he joked, as Elizabeth Reaser (Esme Cullen), Jackson Rathbone (Jasper Hale) and Nikki Reed (Rosalie Hale) followed him through the door.

“Can we just sit down and watch all the extras together? I haven’t seen them yet,” Facinelli said.

“Have you guys seen all the movies?” Reaser asked. Most had.

The stars spent a solid half hour signing DVDs, T-shirts and tote bags, before taking pictures with the kids. Facinelli walked the kids through some of the copious bonuses Summit and Lionsgate included on the DVD and Blu-ray. The four then visited sick children in their rooms.

“I was surprised when they came [in],” Lomas-Lee said, as she looked through the autographed goods she was given. Asked what she planned to do with her signed DVD, she replied: “I’m going to keep mine!”
