The movie version of the Twilight saga comes to an end tomorrow — with quite possibly the biggest vampire smackdown ever committed to film. We sat down with Jackson Rathbone, who plays Jasper, for an exclusive interview. Rathbone told us about the massive battle scene — and why Twilight’s vampires are sort of like the X-Men.
Rathbone also told us that Jasper spent the whole first Twilight movie wanting to kill Bella. Spoilers ahead…
When we sat down with Rathbone, he seemed pretty jazzed about all the fight scenes in the new movie. As the movie begins, Jasper is at peace for the first time since he gave up drinking human blood, not too long ago. But Jasper’s peace is shattered when the Volturi and their allies attack. And Jasper’s never one to back away from a fight. According to Rathbone, there’s a nice little moment early in the film, which comes back in a surprising way towards the end and shows just how far Jasper and Alice are willing to go to protect their family.
And thanks to this influx of new vampires, we get to see lots and lots of vampire fighting styles, and different superpowers, says Rathbone. These new vampires “come from many different walks of life, and some of them have lived through every single war or battle there ever was,” says Rathbone. “They have all these different sensibilities and fighting styles, but with the vampire strength comes a different element,” including various different powers.
“We get something like 30 new vampires and their special powers,” says Rathbone. “I was always an X-Men fanatic,” and these different vampire abilities and fighting styles feel sort of similar. We ask Rathbone which X-Man he’d want to play, and he says, “If it wasn’t done so well already, I’d say Nightcrawler. I have always loved that character since I was a little kid.” But really, he’d love to play any of the X-Men.
EDGE speaks to the charismatic Rathbone on how he makes his vampire stand out and what he takes away from the whole “Twilight” experience.
EDGE: With all the other vampires in the Cullen clan, how did you make Jasper stand out among the pack?
Jackson Rathbone: Throughout the course of ’The Twilight Saga’, I really try to remove Jasper from the other characters in the sense that his own desires and motivations are far different. He is trying to fit in to this vegetarian vampire way of life for love, for the love of Alice. This is a character that is born in war. He has fought his entire life in the civil war when he was turned. He became the leader of vampire armies.
This is seen in ’Twilight: Eclipse.’ I really want to utilize that army training, that sensibility, duty and honor and really give Jasper that feeling, as opposed to having him be a flippant character that just enjoys being a vampire. I want him to show, stand a little straighter, talk a little more direct, and be kind of a quiet badass basically.
EDGE: How was your experience working with your fellow cast members?
Jackson Rathbone: The cast of the ’Twilight’ saga has been incredible. In the first couple of films, we really felt like we connected as a family. Nikki Reed is the godmother of my son. (She is married to ’American Idol’ contestant Paul McDonald.)
It is good to see them a lot. They live really close to me. We have all connected and I hope that these friendships last for years.
Sure, the fifth and final movie will be bittersweet for the fans — but what about the actors in the movie? They have lived with these characters for five years of their lives (that’s a lot of time to be a vampire). We had the opportunity to sit down and chat with actor Jackson Rathbone who plays Jasper, the “creepy” sibling of the vegetarian vampire Cullen clan. He gives us the scoop about the final movie and talks about his years as a vampire with fondness.
I recently did a video interview with Jackson Rathbone for the site — many of you may know him as the creepy and lovable Jasper Hale from the Twilight franchise. With the final installment, Breaking Dawn Part 2 opening in theaters today (many of you have probably already squealed your way through the midnight screening or have already watched it 10 times by the time this has been posted), Jackson had plenty to say — so much that I have some extra tidbits from the interview where he likens a Jasper spin-off to Joey and Frasier and about a glorious Twilight musical!
If you have not seen the film yet, then stop reading now! The article below contains spoilers about the film’s ending.
