These celebrities aren’t pretending and this is not make believe. This is 10 laps of 1.97 miles each at 100-mile-per-hour plus speeds. It’s fast, and things can go wrong. And while it’s all done for charity and in good fun, a competitive mood fills the air in the People Magazine celebrity paddock where the drivers gather before getting in their fancy 210 HP Scion FR-S cars and ripping up the streets.
Rutlledge Wood, from TV’s Top Gear USA, won the pole position on Friday, April 19th as his lap time of 1:45.505 proved the fastest of a lineup that includes Mark Steines (Hallmark Channel’s Home and Family); actor Michael Trucco; Brett Davern from MTV; Medal of Honor Winner Dakota Meyer; actor Jeremy Sisto; comic Wanda Sykes; Olympic Gold Medalist Jessica Hardy; actress Jenna Elfman; Twilight movie star Jackson Rathbone and Latina star Kate De Castillo.
Wood’s Charity, a camp for special needs kids Victory Junction started by Kyle and Pattie Petty in honor of their son Adam, received a check from People Magazine for $15,000 for his fastest lap win.
….
People Magazine has had an ongoing commitment to the Miller’s Children Hospital of Long Beach CHOC, Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
“It’s incredible to be a part of something that has donated over two-million dollars for charity over the years,” the handsome Jackson Rathbone told me right before the race. He was kissing his wife and baby and about to get in to the car. Rathbone is part of a cultural phenomenon with the Twilight movies and as such has legions of young girls (and a few boys) worried about him in the race, particularly, harming his face.
“That’s hysterical,” he laughed. “I hope I don’t hurt any part of my body at all! Look, we had no idea vampires without fangs who lived in the woods basically was going to become what it did. Even when the first movie came out, we all just sat back with wonder and watched the phenomenon explode. It’s been quite a ride, much like this,” he concluded as he kissed his baby one more time before strapping on his helmet.
After the race it was all smiles and hugs, and the friendly spirit of competition surfaced again.
Jackson was joined by the family at yesterday’s Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race Qualifying Day. A few photos from yesterday’s event have been added to the gallery.

39th Annual Toyota Pro / Celebrity Race driver Jackson Rathbone tells us how his last TPCR practice went and the excitement witnessed on the course!
Quick Stats: Jackson Rathbone, actor
Daily Driver: 2012 Lexus RX450h (Jackson’s rating: 9 on a scale of 1 to 10)
Favorite road trip: Los Angeles to Texas
Car he learned to drive in: 1996 Chevy Suburban
First car bought: Scion xB“Twilight” will fans see a very competitive side of Jackson Rathbone tomorrow during the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach celebrity race, where he’ll drive a race-prepped Scion FR-S. The actor, who is best known as Jasper Hale in the vampire saga, has a more relaxed attitude when it comes to dealing with Los Angeles traffic in his 2012 Lexus RX450h. “When L.A. gets too congested in traffic, sometimes I’ll pull over to a side street and take a nap in my car, waiting for the traffic to die down. I sleep very comfortably because the seats are so soft and cushiony,” he says, giving the daily driver a 9 out of 10 rating. “It would have been a 10, but it doesn’t have an espresso machine, so 9.” Rathbone loves his hybrid SUV, calling it “super comfy, economic, and roomy.”
Car he learned to drive in
Rathbone learned to drive in a hand-me-down SUV from his mom, and he says it’s still his favorite car. “My birthday’s a week after hers, so she got a new car and I got her old ’96 Suburban for my 16th birthday,” he says. “When I was 16, I was DJ-ing all over west Texas, so the Suburban was perfect for hauling all of my gear and still had room for four passengers. I remember a time where I was everyone’s ride to some dance and I had about 12 girls in the back of the Suburban, while my buddy Jon and I were riding high in the front. It was good times.”

When Jackson Rathbone visited the BULLETT offices one recent Tuesday for a photo shoot and interview, he came equipped with his crimson-haired better half, stylist Sheila Hafsadi and 6-month-old baby son, Monroe Jackson Rathbone VI. Asking for style advice from the teensy little progeny, Rathbone was a decidedly warmer, more soulful version of the character he has been known for over the past 4 years, Twilight’s blood-lusting Cullen clan vampire, Jasper Hale. With the Twilight movie franchise taking its final lap in theaters, the world is entering a new life cycle, and so is Rathbone. This month he debuts his first solo album, Billy Badass, an explorative work of multiple genres, blues and country included, where Rathbone takes his love of storytelling into record form. Here Rathbone talks about the last night on the Twilight set, his sartorial choices choices (one crushed red velvet suit in particular), and his childhood travelling the world.
How many interviews do you think you’ve done since the whole Twilight franchise has started?
Since it began?
Hundreds. Are you going to miss all that craziness?
Yes and no. I like crazy. I was born on the run. I was born travelling. I was born in Singapore, so I like moving around. I like being in constant motion. So I’ll miss that aspect of it. As an actor, I like being someone else. So it’s kind of like the hardest part of it all—doing the press. It’s one of those requisites of the business that you don’t find out about until you’re in the business. When I was a little actor back on the stage in high school, I was just playing parts. That’s what I love: being someone else. What was the craziest or most memorable moment from the Twilight experience?
The first Twilight premiere. Pulling up in the car with my parents in town and seeing all the people out there, that was weird. That was a trip. We didn’t think it would be as big as it was or had become. It was gaining steam as we were filming and by the time we were done filming, it was a lot bigger than we had anticipated. But when we got to the red carpet there were a lot of people screaming and taking pictures of us, and yelling our names, which was really weird. Are you going to keep in touch with anyone from the cast?
I think so. Definitely. We’ve become good friends over the years, and Nikki Reed’s the godmother of my baby, so I think we’re going to see plenty of her.
