The Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war against the other three nations. The film’s hero, the reluctant young Aang is the “Last Airbender” — the Avatar, who, according to prophecy, has the ability to manipulate all of the elements and bring all the nations together. Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara and her bull-headed brother Sokka, Aang proceeds on a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world.
Sokka’s most prized possession is his boomerang, a traditional Water Tribe weapon given to him by his father. Unlike his younger sister Katara, he does not posses any bending abilities – and thinks that Waterbending sometimes brings more troubles than solutions. Sokka believes that planning strategies and thinking things through is the smart way to fight against the Fire Nation. He’ll do anything to protect his family and friends and has no problem taking on soldiers with his bare hands and warrior tactics if necessary.
Trivia & Facts
• Jackson originally auditioned for the role of Zuko, but M. Night thought he was too dark for Jackson. He soon auditioned for Sokka instead and as many know, he got the role of Sokka!
• Before Jesse McCartney was replaced by Dev Patel, both he and Jackson did a reading together and even did a bit of fight training as well. When asked by MTV if any musical collaboration between the two would happen, Jesse replied with, “We haven’t talked about that yet, I’m sure I’ll get to know all of this about him.”
• Jesse McCartney was originally cast to play Zuko, but was replaced with Dev Patel due to scheduling conflicts. Even after this casting change, the film remains the subject of controversy and protest due to the casting decision of all four lead roles.
• The film was originally titled “Avatar: the Last Airbender”, after the TV show it was based on. However, James Cameron owned the rights to the name “Avatar”, and threatened legal action if the title wasn’t changed.
• While on set in Greenland, Jackson would have snowball fights with his younger cast members.
Katara: It worked better that time, I thought about mom. Isn’t it strange?
Sokka: Yeah… guess so. Stop doing that stuff around me. I always get wet.
Sokka: It’s trying to eat me! (After Appa hits him over the head with his tail.)
Sokka: Fire nation is here and they brought their machines. Don’t come out until I tell you it’s safe.
Sokka: They were looking for someone older, they were looking for someone with the same markings the boy had.
Katara: They dragged mom away the same way when we were babies. She wouldn’t have stood and watched us be taken away. She would have fought. We found that boy, he’s our responsibility. We should fight! What would you do if they tried taking me away?
Sokka: I’d kill them all.
Sokka: Because you’re my sister. Because dad told me to protect you with my life.
Katara: Because I’m your responsibility. This boy is our responsibility.
Sokka: What do you want us to do, Katara? How are we supposed to save him? They’re on a ship, we’d need a miracle to catch them. I know you think everything’s going to work out, but I don’t.
Sokka: Fire rat! They’re poisonous! Get behind me!
Sokka: So… are you the Avatar, Aang?
Sokka: No one is taking anyone away!
Sokka: The Fire Nation’s plan, suppress all other bending.
Sokka: Okay! Everybody can help us now!
Sokka: A lot of the villages in this part of the Earth Kingdom are occupied by the Fire Nation like this village was. They prey on the weakest towns and villages, we should go visit some of these towns, Aang.
Sokka: Okay so what if we found you teachers, teachers to teach you bending? Which element would you have to learn first?
Aang: Water. Water comes after air in the cycle. Air, water, earth, fire.
Sokka: There are really powerful benders in the Northern Water tribe. My dad told me about it before he left. It’s led by a princess because her father died. There are teachers there for sure, but they’re all the way on the other side of the world.
Aang: We can get there on Appa.
Sokka: That’s what I was thinking, and maybe we can stop in villages on the way. Start a change in the war in these small villages… should we try it?
Aang: Yes, we should.
Sokka: I guess your talk didn’t work.
Katara: He’ll be back in a day.
Sokka: The Fire Nation is following us. We make a wrong move, they’ll catch him.
Yue: I will come visit our sister city, the Southern Water tribe and spend some time in your home.
Sokka: That would be great, but I warn you… my grandmother will ask you a lot of questions.
Yue: What might she ask me?
Sokka: She’ll say, ‘Why is your hair white, young lady? You look very odd.’
Yue: I would say to your grandmother, ‘My hair is white because when I was born I was not awake. My mother and father could not get me to make a sound or move. So they prayed for days to the moon spirit and dipped me into the sacred waters. My parents said my hair turned white then and life poured into me.’
Sokka: Whoa, you didn’t tell me that.
Yue: You didn’t ask me. Your grandmother did.
Yue: What is this?
Sokka: Yue… the Fire Nation is here.
Sokka: Please, don’t do this… There must be another way… You can’t do this, I was supposed to protect you!
“For me, it’s a great chance to show my range a little bit more, it’s a chance to do something a little funnier. Something less serious than Jasper.”
“It’s just an action-packed, epic film. I’m starting to do martial-arts training, which is going to be so much fun, and we’re doing a lot of interesting work with the green screen. It’s such a mythical world. We get to go to Asia, go film abroad. It’s just going to be such a blast.”
“Aw, man I got to do a lot of fight scenes in ‘Airbender’, it was fun for me, because I grew up a little bit in Texas, and did a little Texas football. So, that little contact is good every once in a while; it kind of lets the aggression out.”
“Jasper is so composed and kind of holding it all back, so getting to play a character where I can just run into people was great! I got to do this fight scene where I get attacked by three different people at the same time; I’m running through a battle trying to find my little sister, worried about where she is, and this guy charges me with a sword! So, I make the split decision to just tackle him, take him straight to the ground, and then someone else comes behind me and tries to slash me in the back – so I pull that guy over me, and he hits his own guy.”
“I auditioned for over a year for the role of Prince Zuko. I went in for reading with Night [M. Night Shyamalan]. Night said that the reading was too dark so I offered to read another character to show Night that I could do both sides of the character. I read the part of Sokka and I had fun reading this part. After I was done Night told me that he was going to Sokka instead of Prince Zuko. At first I said “no” because I really wanted Zuko. I had two months of Kung Fu training and we trained on off days, but I cannot kick to save my life. I can maybe fight a baby with my kicks.”
“In a way, Sokka is a hick from the Southern Water Tribe, and he goes to the big city of the Northern Water Tribe, where he meets this beautiful and sophisticated princess. Their relationship teaches him so much, and he grows up a great deal.”
