As discrete as he seems to be on screen, Jackson Rathbone is in real life, as well. Besides the Twilight Saga the portrayer of Jasper Cullen will soon bring himself into notice with other roles, such as in the next film of Night Shaymalan The Last Airbender and, of course, his band 100 Monkeys who work on their first album.
One: Excluding the scene when you attack Bella your character barely appears in New Moon.
Jackson Rathbone: That’s true, but it’s defaulted by the book. Jasper is not very on the spot, but I’ve known that before. But for the third part, Eclipse, it’s different, I’ll have to get on a move for that…(laughs)
One: Can you tell us more about it?
JR: In Eclipse the part of Jasper is very important because he is the only one who knows how to defeat the vampires that surround Victoria. Plus, the movie includes a scene where his past comes up. You will get to know how he was turned into a vampire. And we will have flashback scenes that take place in the Civil War in the 19th century… Jasper was a Major in the Confederate Army. I got to wear an awesome costume! And in some scenes I was allowed to ride a horse! Even though the flashback scene is shorter than in Stephenie Meyer’s book it gives you some insights of my character.
One: In that movie you will be able to work together with Kristen Stewart more often…
JR: Exactly. Up until know our cooperation is confined to one dialogue line. The only real contact with her is confined to the birthday party scene where I leap at her in New Moon.(laughs) In Eclipse we have several scenes together where our film characters talk to each other. It was time for it, eventually.
One: How did you spend the time between shots, you and your fellow actors?
JR: We often met in our dressing rooms to play board games. Kellan (Lutz) came up with the idea and we all became pretty enthusiastic gamers. Further it sometimes happened that we played music together. We the Cullens are all music lovers and someone would bring his instrument along and start to play all the time. Maybe we should record an album someday.(laughs)
One: In terms of music you’re almost professional with your band 100 Monkeys. Will you release an album?
JR: Yes, we’re well on the way to it. At first I started the band just for fun without thinking of a career as a musician, but by now it’s a project that becomes more and more important. We already recorded some songs. And it could be that one of them will be included to the soundtrack of Eclipse. We are still debating about it, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed…
One: Would you have preferred to play the role of Edward instead of Jasper?
JR: I’m not sure. One year before the start of filming Stephenie Meyer created a list with actors she would have liked to see as Edward. And I was one of them. I tried and auditioned for it, but it didn’t work. But never mind. On one side I think I couldn’t have done it better than Rob. On the other side I couldn’t have endured it to suddenly be on the front page of every tabloid paper. I like the character of Jasper and today I wouldn’t change with anyone for anything in the world.
One: Is there a question you don’t want to answer anymore?
JR: “Are Robert and Kristen dating?” of course. I don’t want to hear this question anymore! I’m being asked it all the time. But it just isn’t my concern; it’s none of my business. I absolutely don’t know if there is more between the two of them and I even don’t want to know.
