Guild Hall gets a taste of Twilight and a review by Susie!

Pushcart Prize Benefit“Twilight” mania took a bite out of East Hampton this weekend when two of its highly sought-after stars, Jackson Rathbone and Edi Gathegi, performed at WordTheatre’s Pushcart Prize Benefit at Guild Hall on Saturday.

Gathegi said “This is my first real time” being in the Hamptons. Though, he does admit he stopped by for “a hot minute” on New Year’s Eve in 2004, but doesn’t count it as a real Hamptons experience. “It’s gorgeous here! I love it!” said Gathegi.

Gathegi flew that day from Italy and was leaving at 6 a.m. Sunday morning to head back to New York City, but called his stop in the Hamptons “a nice buffer. It’s beautiful here!”

His co-star and fellow vampire Rathbone drove five and a half hours from Philadelphia, where he is filming “The Last Airbender,” the highly anticipated M. Night Shyamalan action/fantasy film based on the Nickelodeon cartoon series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” in order to read one of the Pushcart Prize winning stories.

Rathbone provided the after-party’s entertainment by performing a six-song set with his 100 Monkeys bandmate, Ben Graupner. Rathbone joked during the intimate performance that they were “down three monkeys”. The fan girls didn’t seem to mind as they took pictures and video of his performance.

Ania Perrin, a teenage “Twilight” fan, said she made her mother buy two $100 tickets for the event just to see Rathbone because “he’s just like really hot. And he’s a good actor.”

And here is Susie’s review from the event and the performance by Ben G and Jackson! Photos she took are also in the gallery. And remember, do not post the photos without permission! Thanks!

All I can say is it was awesome – and bizarre – and hilarious…….and really, really bizarre!

First of all – Edi Gathegi is not only hilarious, but really sweet as well.  His reading was awesome.  John Heard – holy hell – I was literally laughing so hard it hurt, Brian Cox as well…….who knew a “table” could have so many meanings.

At the very end of the night (star closes the show right……either that or they put him there because they knew their driver would manage to turn a 4 hour trip into a 6 hour trip)…..Jackson reading “The Bank Robbery”.  I have seen so much of Jackson the monkey musician the past two months I really enjoyed seeing him do something different.  He channeled his inner Texan for the male voice of the story, and resurrected the “Amanda” falsetto for the female part…….any one ever doubt that was actually Jackson’s voice when he was “Amanda”…..no doubts – it was him – saw it live and in person.  He really is unbelievably talented.  He is the consumate performer who captures you and keeps your attention the entire time.  He uses everything about himself to bring you into to what he is trying to perform – which you might notice if you can get past the way his eyes seem to draw your attention.  Y’all know me – not a fangirl who is gaga over Jackson for his looks – but you can’t help but be drawn to him in a live performance.

After we brushed elbows with the celebs at the after party – okay I mostly was looking for somewhere WARM – it was so cold in theatre.  I heard the guys setting up – and moved so I could listen, but not attract the attention of the twigirlies who were gunnin’ for Jackson. Debbie was right – they did rehearse “Junkie” which caused me to start laughing because of the 12 Steps joke.  When they let us go in and be seated we noticed some new “toys” onstage – which were their supplements for missing monkeys.

They did do a shout out to the missing guys by doing a duo rendition of Ugly Girl…….Jackson on guitar, and Ben G on a whole mes of interesting noise making gizmo’s.  It was extremely tongue in cheek – and the only people who really probably got just how funny it really was were the three maybe four junkies in attendance……I laughed til it hurt.

About three songs into the set there was a shout out from one of the other diehards “Are we having fun?”  To which Jackson professed he missed Jared.  We all did.  Then he turned around and said he was used to Ben J being behind him – but when he turned around it was empty.  Again, we all missed Ben J, and Uncle Larry, and Marty………..BUT……

What a unique chance to get hear just Jackson and Ben G.  We heard songs no one has heard, including a song that they said was the very first one they ever wrote together.  I didn’t catch all the names because I wasn’t writing them down – I was just enjoying them.

Overall it was a very neat experience — for one, I was dressed up and COLD!  I didn’t know Monkey shows could possibly be COLD…..and two we were sitting and no one was rubbing up on our butts……and three…..when I hugged Ben before we left……he wasn’t all sweaty.  Kinda like an alternate reality Monkey concert lol — as Jackson put it “they were about 60 monkeys short”.  It was still awesome – and I would go to see the boys no matter if it’s one of them or all of them.

The night ended with a hug from Ben G, and me telling him “this is really it – I won’t see you again until Callahan’s”…….to which he professed that weekend was going to be “wicked fun”.

So there ya go – Callahan’s is predestined to be wicked fun because evil monkey said so.

Susie, love your review; I feel like I am back at Guild Hall. Take a close look at the guitar…see the tag hanging down. We wondered where they got all their toys for the show. Sorry we did not meet Scooby Lady, but glad you were there. Quite an experience!

Yes it was an interesting take on a 100 Monkeys show. But it was very nice to be able to sit down AND see them on stage. Going there I knew I would be seeing Jackson at the upcoming conventions so it wasn’t so sad saying good-bye to him. But Ben G was a WHOLE different story. I thought I was going to start blubbering like a two year old but I managed to hold it together long enough to make it to the car. After that is kind of a blur. But at least now I know I will be able to go to Callahan’s so I’m really looking forward to that.

Hopefully he does go to the NJ convention. Jackson might have to cancel going to the Georgia, Minnesota and Arizona conventions because of some scheduling conflict with some of the film projects he is involved with.

That’s great Debbie, see you at Callahan’s. I absolutely can’t wait for this show. And Scooby Lady it would just be my luck that Jackson can’t go to the conventions since I’ve put out a small fortune to attend both Atlanta & Minneapolis. Fingers crossed it works out!

I wish you luck Maria! Have fun for me, if he does go to Atlanta and Minneapolis. My sister and I are saving a small fortune for next year’s Twilight conventions- hopefully Jackson goes to some of those :)

If you haven’t noticed yet, Maria. It has been confirmed that Jackson is not going to the convention in Atlanta. Hopefully, you haven’t bought the admission ticket for it yet, cause you won’t be refunded for that. The only thing you will be refunded for are the autograph and Photo-ops tickets.

Yes Scooby Lady I did see that he’s not going to be in Atlanta. And yes I did buy the tickets already. But I think we’ll still go because we have plans to visit Graceland, Elvis Presley’s Birthplace in Tupelo and Shoeless Joe Jackson’s gravesite in SC. But we’ll probably only stay at the convention for the Charity Breakfast and then get an early start home. Fingers crossed he’ll still be able to go to Minneapolis. They haven’t announced anything for that one yet.

It was one of those things Becky – Debbie and I talked about it, then we bought the tickets and talked about it some more…..in the end we decided to go.
I think the “old fogies” needed some Monkey peace and quiet lol It was DEFINITELY unique to be dressed up, cold, and only have 2 monkeys.
To be honest – you are a 100 times more likely to find me in a theatre versus a BAR! I love the theatre – and seeing Jackson “on” as an actor was great.
Callahan’s will be beyond wicked fun!
